Photo Friday: Sand Dune Adventure

On a recent family reunion trip to the Outer Banks, we visited Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head, North Carolina.  This state park is home to the tallest sand dunes on the East Coast.  If you can brave the heat—the dunes are usually 20-30 degrees hotter than the air temperature—it’s quite an experience!

Besides self-guided walks, many people take hang-gliding lessons here, although these looked too strenuous for my vacation.  Many people go sand-boarding and sledding too.  We saw a group of teenagers sledding down the dunes on flattened cardboard boxes—I would definitely try this on our next visit.  While the sand dunes mix well with a beach vacation, I felt like I was a million miles away from our beach house.  This is what made it such an adventure!

    I can get into sand-boarding not too sure about the flatten box style sledding though.

    Ok. I couldn’t believe this is in NC if you didn’t say so. It looks like you guys were at the desert. Sounds like it’s a great place to visit. Making note to my list now. :)

    Living in Michigan we just love the Dunes. They are a valuable and wonderful asset. Glad other states appreciate them too.

    I just had a friend return from the Outer Banks, I need to find out if she went to Nags Head. I like the dramatic perspective of the clouds meeting the sand in the first photo.

    Sand Dunes blow my mind. I once walked 2 miles of sand dunes in a dessert, it was soooooo hard to do, but sooooooooo unbelievably beautiful!

    We do love our dunes in Michigan. I managed to finally do the Dune Climb at Sleeping Bear Dunes in northern Michigan a few years back. Didn’t see anyone sledding down, but the walk down was a lot nicer than the climb up :)
