Welcome to Rome Week! Given that we know Italy so well, we’re excited to add Rome to the other family vacation destinations we’ve spent a full week covering including Paris with kids, Washington DC with kids, New York City with kids, and Hawaii with kids.

Rome travel tips and guides. Walking tour giveaway!

We’re kicking the week off with recommended Rome travel tips and guides to help you started planning a visit to Rome with kids.

In addition, one of our favorite walking tour guides for families, Paolo Lenzi, is giving away a free two-hour tour of Rome to one lucky winner. Paolo specializes in ancient Rome and is an amazing resource that manages to share an unbelievable amount of information and engage kids. Rome is an exciting destination and provides and a rich cultural experience for both adults and children. The ruins bring history to life, especially when coupled with family activities like Gladiator School. Add in the mouth-watering food, awe-inspiring art and wonderful parks full of families, and you have the setting for an unforgettable family vacation. Now, Rome is certainly busy, but quite manageable when planned thoughtfully with a realistic approach to what you can do each day with kids-in-tow.

Reading and history for kids:

Before you head to Rome, explore great history books and sites with your children. Think about printing out some pages and attaching them to an itinerary to give the kids some background information.

Nancy’s Kids Travel Book List for Rome is a great place to choose some pre-trip reading. This is one city where I highly recommend reading ahead of time so the kids have some idea of what they are seeing.

    Thanks to your recommendation, my family and I are booked at Internazionale Domus, right by the beautiful Spanish Steps and within walking distance to so many sites. It looks like the perfect “base” for our trip to Rome in late May. We have a beautiful apartment for our family, plus my sister and a friend. We are so excited….thank you!

We will be in Rome the first week in July with our 14yr. old daughter and 8yr. old son so all ideas and suggestions for maximizing our 4 days there are very welcome.

    Love this whole week on Rome…thanks for all of the great links and resources. I especially love the very thorough list of reading suggestions for Rome. We already have some of the books, but we are always eager to expand our “library”. Reading about where we are traveling always makes our trips more interesting. Headed to Naples and Pompeii this week and hoping to make it back to Rome soon.
